Reflejar
Public Projects
Developed in residency at the Guapamacataro Art and Ecology Center, Julia Mandle created Reflejar. Translated as "to reflect," the project is a public installation and participatory event, revolving around the Albedo effect - the theory that as the white ice caps melt, the Earth's ability to reflect light and heat decreases, speeding up global warming.
PAGEBREAK
Inspired by traditional Mexican embroidery and the prevalence of spiders' webs in the Maravatio landscape, Mandle taught community participants the "Sun Stitch". Using posts in the ground, Mandle and the participants create a large network of sunburst shaped embroideries that overlap and dot the landscape. By using white embroidery string, Mandle hopes to create a moment for the public to meditate on the Albedo effect and the ways that individuals can create a positive impact by slowing down global warming.
